QCAT Lab joined stakeholders across academia, civil society, and the technology ecosystem to commemorate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, reaffirming its commitment to inclusive research and the responsible use of emerging technologies to advance accessibility.
The event, held under the theme “Assistive Technology: Empowering Lives, Advancing Inclusion,” brought together disability advocates, researchers, policymakers, and innovators to explore practical pathways for leveraging technology to improve the lives of persons with disabilities.

At the event, Dr. Justice Owusu Agyemang, Theme Lead for Assistive Technology, presented key findings from a scoping study on the AI Intersection and Disability Innovation in Africa Project. The report explores how artificial intelligence is being applied across the continent to address disability-related challenges, while identifying critical gaps, opportunities, and ethical considerations.
Advancing Inclusive Research and Innovation
QCAT Lab’s participation reflects its broader mission to ensure that advanced technologies—particularly in computing and data-driven research—are developed with inclusion, equity, and real-world impact at their core.
Through active engagement in discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions, the Lab contributed perspectives on how research institutions can design technologies that are not only innovative, but also accessible, ethical, and responsive to the lived experiences of persons with disabilities.
Highlighting the Role of Assistive Technology
A key focus of the commemoration was the growing role of assistive technology in breaking barriers to mobility, communication, education, and access to essential services. Discussions emphasized the importance of locally driven innovation, policy alignment, and interdisciplinary collaboration to ensure assistive technologies are affordable, context-aware, and sustainable.
QCAT Lab aligns strongly with this vision, recognizing that meaningful innovation must be co-created with end users and supported by enabling policy frameworks.
Commitment to Inclusion and Responsible Technology
As emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and advanced computing continue to shape society, QCAT Lab remains committed to contributing research and solutions that prioritize inclusion and social impact.
Participation in the International Day of Persons with Disabilities underscores the Lab’s dedication to:
Inclusive research practices
Ethical and responsible technology development
Collaboration with disability-focused organisations
Advancing accessibility through innovation
Looking Forward
QCAT Lab will continue to engage with partners, policymakers, and communities to support initiatives that empower persons with disabilities and promote inclusive technological progress.
By aligning research excellence with social responsibility, the Lab aims to contribute to a future where innovation works for everyone.
